Who is responsible

WizardChat is a Matrix client. Your account, messages, files and contacts are stored on the Matrix homeserver you sign in to, not by us. For that data, the operator of your homeserver is responsible, and their privacy policy applies.

This website

Hosting

wizardchat.org is hosted on GitLab Pages by GitLab Inc. When you visit, your browser sends technical data such as your IP address, the page requested, the time and your browser’s user agent. GitLab processes this to deliver the site and may keep it in short-lived server logs.

Analytics

We use Plausible Analytics, which we run on our own server. It sets no cookies and stores no personal data. Your IP address and user agent are only used to create a daily changing, anonymous visitor ID and are not stored. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

The web app

Hosting

app.wizardchat.org is served by Cloudflare Pages (Cloudflare, Inc.). As with any website, Cloudflare receives technical data such as your IP address and user agent to deliver the app and protect it from abuse.

Your homeserver

The app runs in your browser and talks directly to the homeserver you choose. Messages, files, your profile and calls go to that server, and in encrypted rooms they are end-to-end encrypted before they leave your device. Voice and video calls use the call server your homeserver provides. We never receive this data.

Stored on your device

Your session, settings and encryption keys are stored in your browser’s local storage so you stay signed in. They are not sent to us.

GIF search (optional)

GIF search is provided by GIPHY (GIPHY, Inc.). It is only used after you agree to it in the app. When you search, your search text and your IP address are sent to GIPHY.

Location sharing (optional)

If you share your location, it is sent to the room like any other message. Opening a shared location takes you to openstreetmap.org, where OpenStreetMap’s privacy policy applies.

The desktop app

The desktop app contains the same web app, so everything above applies, except that the app’s files are already on your computer. To check for and download updates, the app contacts GitLab (gitlab.com) regularly, which receives your IP address and the app version.

Transfers outside the EU

GitLab, Cloudflare and GIPHY are based in the USA, so data may be processed there. Where a provider is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, transfers are based on it, otherwise on the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability (Art. 15–21 GDPR). To use these rights, contact us: [email protected].

Because we don’t store your account or messages, requests about that data have to go to the operator of your homeserver.

Changes

We update this policy when WizardChat starts using a new service. The date at the top shows the latest version.
