Features
WizardChat is a Matrix client for friends, groups and communities. Here’s what it can do, and answers to the questions people ask most.
What’s included
End-to-end encryption
Messages, files and calls are encrypted on your device before they leave it. The server only ever sees scrambled data.
Files, images and video
Drag anything into a chat to send it. Images and videos play right in the conversation.
Message search
Search a room’s history when you need to find something someone said last week.
Reactions, edits and replies
React with any emoji, fix a typo after sending, and reply to a message so the context stays attached.
Custom emojis, stickers and GIFs
Upload your own emoji and sticker packs, animated ones too, and search GIFs from the picker.
Themes
Several dark and light themes to make you feel right at home
Polls
Ask the room a question and watch the votes come in.
Public rooms
Browse the public rooms on any Matrix server and join with a click.
Threads

Frequently asked questions
What is WizardChat?
WizardChat is a free, open-source messaging app built on the [Matrix] protocol. It offers end-to-end encrypted messaging, voice and video calls, file sharing and more, and works in your browser as well as on Windows, macOS and Linux as a desktop app.
Is WizardChat a good Discord alternative?
Yes, if you want something that works like Discord without the paid tier or the data collection. Spaces, rooms, voice rooms, screen sharing, roles and custom emojis all work the way you’d expect. Read how WizardChat compares to Discord.
Is WizardChat free to use?
Yes. WizardChat is completely free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license, with no paid tiers or feature locks. You can use your own Matrix homeserver or choose a featured one like matrix.org.
Is my data end-to-end encrypted?
Yes. Every message, call and file is end-to-end encrypted by default. Only you and the people you are talking to can read the contents of a conversation - not even the server operator can.
Which platforms does WizardChat support?
WizardChat runs in any modern web browser, so there is nothing to install. Desktop apps are also available for Windows, macOS and Linux.
How do I create an account?
Open the app and either register a new account or sign in with an existing Matrix account. You can use a featured homeserver like matrix.org, or point WizardChat at your own homeserver. Some servers also support single sign-on (SSO).
Can I use my own homeserver?
Yes. WizardChat is a client, not a server, so you can connect it to any Matrix homeserver you like. If a server requires additional verification, register through that server's web interface first, then sign in.
Does WizardChat support voice and video calls?
Yes. WizardChat has built-in one-to-one and group voice and video calls with screen sharing, using MatrixRTC, so you can also call people who use Element. Add a voice room to any space and hop in whenever you want.
What is Matrix?
Matrix is an open, decentralised protocol for real-time communication. Anyone can run a homeserver, and servers federate with each other, so you can talk to people across the whole Matrix network without being locked into one provider. Our help center explains what Matrix is in plain words.
Where can I get help or report a bug?
Join the community room or open an issue on GitLab.
Still have a question? Check the help center, ask in our Matrix room or open an issue on GitLab.
